It was Eleanor Roosevelt who said, “With the new days comes new strength and new thoughts.” What a powerful idea. I have to admit though; I haven’t always felt that when I first wake up. But it’s true, when you think about it. A new day. A new chance. A new hope, even when sometimes, it’s hard to see or feel it.
There is something undeniably powerful about mornings. Even if you’re not a natural early riser, mornings offer a small but meaningful reset. There is always that one moment of stillness before the momentum of the day begins. In that early space, before the rush of responsibilities and notifications, you hold the ability to shape your mindset, influence your emotions, and choose the tone for the hours ahead.
A morning ritual is not about perfection, productivity pressure, or forcing yourself into a strict routine that feels overwhelming. Instead, it’s about crafting a gentle, supportive psychological anchor that helps you reconnect with yourself. Think of it as a foundation, or a way to greet the day with intention rather than reaction, clarity rather than chaos.
In today’s world, where stress is high and time feels scarce, a morning mindset ritual isn’t just a luxury. It’s a lifeline. By practicing a few small habits daily, you can elevate your mood, sharpen your focus, nurture emotional balance, and make decisions that align with the life you want to create.
Yet, it would be easy to ask, why? What would any morning mindset rituals do for you? How could they make a difference?
It’s simple. Our actions, each day, each step, each meal, have consequences. Oftentimes we associate the word consequences with negative connections. But that’s not always the case. All actions have consequences. Good actions can have good consequences. Helping others, who in turn help you one day when you need it, is another example. Seeking medical help, which, in turn, helps you heal. Or even helping with friends, co-workers, or charities, and investing your time and energy can have consequences that fill your life with blessings without measure. We all know the value of friendship. So, I’ll ask, if you were not a good friend to them, would they be a good friend to you? Consequences.
So, let’s think about that now that we have a better understanding of that word. Well start first with the idea that each morning shapes our internal atmosphere. Have you ever noticed when you wake up late, you are stressed and rushed, and it seems like one thing after another bombards you, causing more stress or delays? Have you noticed on days you get to wake up with no rush, naturally or carefully as you get up, stretch, and feel that calm before the day starts and you just feel it’s going to be a good day? That is because what you do in the first 30 to 60 minutes after waking influences many things in your body. These things include:
- Your emotional tone
- Your stress threshold
- Your ability to concentrate
- Your resilience throughout the day
- Your sense of control and empowerment
When you start the day grounded, the challenges that follow feel more manageable.
The second reason is when you wake up after a long sleep, your mind enters a state of consciousness where creativity, insight, and subconscious processing are heightened. What does this mean? It means your thoughts sink deeper and mindset, lasts longer. That’s why when you wake up stressed, your day is stressed. It’s interesting when you think about these psychological changes or shifts happening so often that we hardly notice it. That is why taking the time to give yourself a calm, positive mindset can be helpful.
If you are like me, then no doubt you have had those days when thinking of one positive thing seems like climbing a mountain barefoot in the cold. Somedays, it feels impossible. We are all human with strengths and flaws and doubts mixed with worries that sometimes become our biggest opponent. So, I encourage writing down or starting each day with something that makes you feel positive. Here are a few ideas, but I encourage you to pick a few that means something to you to spark the positive change:
- “I am safe.”
- “I am centered.”
- “I can handle today.”
- “I am worth it.”
- “I will accomplish my work today.”
- “I matter.”
- “My day starts with me.”
- “I am the hero of my story.”
These are just a few simple starters but there are millions of things you can do or say to start your day feeling positive that keeps you feeling positive.
It’s important to remember that the quietest way to fail a morning routine is by biting off more than you are ready to chew. Start simple and light. Keep it supportive. You are your biggest supporter or biggest villain. So, decide which will you be today? Start small and overtime, you can add and tweak it to match your needs.
Another step you can do to add to your morning ritual is to try deep breathing, stretching, and movement that gets your body to wake up and face the day.
Another idea is before you grab that desperate cup of coffee, drink a glass of water. Did you know your brain is 75% water? Naturally, when we wake up, we are dehydrated, so drinking a glass of water will improve your focus, alertness, mood, and clarity. Don’t let that sluggish feeling follow you. Especially when a glass of water first can make a huge difference.
The last idea I would like to share is what I call visualization. When you take a deep breath, and say those positive messages to yourself, try visualizing a version of yourself you either love or would like to be someday. Imagine yourself with confidence, a healthy lifestyle, a job or work that makes you proud. Do you see yourself getting that new job you want? Or imagine yourself feeling happy, truly happy despite all you have been through. Can you see it? Give it a try.
It’s amazing how these little, simple things can make a huge impact on your life. And now, I’d like to repeat what I shared in the beginning with Eleanor Roosevelt. “With the new day comes new strength and new thoughts.”
I sometimes have people tell me that they have no positive thoughts or messages because there is nothing positive in their life. There is so much stress, bills, demands, and worries that flood them making it hard to see the rays of sunshine in between the dark shadows they can barely see through. So, I answer, are you sure about that? I challenge them to name three things they love. Is there a person? Pet? Place? Do they like the sunshine? Do they like cloudy days? Tea or coffee? Even little things can bring immense joy, and the trick is remembering that and not taking it for granted.
So, I’d like to challenge you all to face each new day as exactly that: a new day. Each morning is a fresh start. Think of it as a reset button to prevent you from making past mistakes or moving backwards to the pain of the past. You don’t need a long or elaborate routine. You only need yourself. Because you are enough. Always. Even when others can’t see it. Even when others might forget about you or show no interest or care. That’s a them issue, not one for you. You are enough. You are worthy. And you have the power to create the day you want to create. And it’s my hope you can open your eyes and see it and start each day in a positive mindset, because you will be amazed how a positive mindset as you face the day will take you to new, positive places full of endless possibilities.
